Golf in Tanegashima
Several weeks ago I played golf at Tanegashima’s premiere 18 hole course, the Iwasaki resort (pictured above). It was a grudge match of epic proportions that pitted Tanegashima High School vs. Nakatane High School match (while I teach at both school in this match I was representing Tanegashima High School, the winning team). It was kind of a cold and windy day and the night before the tournament I was out drinking until 3:00 a.m., so I ended up marking down a 125 for 18 holes, which was good for 7th place out of the 11 teachers participating. The Iwasaki Resort is a really nice course, and it ought to be because it cost me $100 for a single round of golf. The rough is kind of like Prairie Dunes (my ‘home’ course) but the layout is a lot more forgiving (I still managed to loose 3 balls, however). One thing about Japanese people is that they take their time while playing golf. And by take their time I
mean I got to the course at 8:30 am and didn’t leave until after 4 p.m. (we teed off at 9:15, took a lunch break, and then afterward everyone showers and hangs out naked in the community bath – which, by the way, I don’t think would go over too well in America).
